How do Audi's control units communicate over CAN bus?

Audi's control units exchange data over a CAN bus network linking more than twenty units, from the engine unit (Unit 01) to the airbag unit (Unit 15), and a fault code in one unit shows its effect in another unit connected to it.

A VCDS or ODIS tool reads each unit individually through the OBD port under the steering column, distinguishing between coding, which defines the unit to the car's specification, and adaptation, which teaches the unit actual values such as transmission shift points or steering-wheel angle.

The engine unit (Unit 01), transmission (Unit 02), ABS (Unit 03) and airbag (Unit 15) are the most frequently accessed in daily inspection, while the central gateway unit coordinates communication between all units over the CAN bus without data conflicts.
