What is the difference between VCDS, ODIS, and generic OBD tools?
Generic OBD tools read only the engine unit through a standard port, with generic codes rather than detailed ones. VCDS and ODIS are genuine Volkswagen Group diagnostic tools that read every control unit and can also code and adapt settings.
A generic OBD tool connects to the car's port and shows generic codes like P0300 without unit details or live values. That's enough for a quick check, but it won't catch transmission, airbag, or air-conditioning faults.
Independent technicians use VCDS, which reads every unit from 01 to 75 and codes basic settings. ODIS is the Volkswagen Group's own original tool, and we use it for the latest coding jobs and software updates that some newer Audi models require.
